Wife and mother made me guilty

My wife's friend invited us to her wedding anniversary, and I asked my mother to babysit her three-year-old son. She agreed. We are happy that the issue was resolved so quickly.

We were invited to the restaurant at two o'clock in the afternoon. We had already begun to gather, when my mother called and said that her tooth ached badly, and she had already made an appointment with the doctor. I understood how mywife , who already disliked my mother, and began to ask my mother to be patient until tomorrow. I could then take her to the dentist. But she said she couldn't stand it and would go now. I never understood how she could get to the doctor on Sunday!

I recounted the conversation to my wife and suggested that she go herself. She refused, sulked all evening, did not talk, cried. Like it's all my fault. The evening was spoiled, but not completely, as my mother came without a call. She said that she consulted the dentist and could stay with her grandson. But my mother insisted, was indignant that she had come in spite of everything, and we were behaving like offended schoolchildren. Then my wife came out and said: “You invented a toothache to spite me!”.

The mother left in tears after a few more hurtful remarks from his wife. I tried to stop the fight, but I can't take sides, can I? Now I am an enemy for both. The wife is angry that she did not support, and the mother that she did not protect.
