Colistin

Colistin

Colistin is a polymyxin antibiotic used to treat infections caused by many types of bacteria, including those that have become resistant to other antibiotics.

However, in recent years it has been found that the use of colistin in animal husbandry can lead to the development of resistance in bacteria, which can be hazardous to human health. In this regard, the European Union has banned the use of colistin in animal husbandry since 2006.

However, in some countries, including China and India, colistin is still widely used in livestock production. This has led to the emergence of new strains of bacteria that cannot be treated with colistin.

Therefore, the use of colistin should be limited only to the treatment of severe infections in humans when other antibiotics are not effective. Measures should also be taken to control the use of colistin in animal production and to encourage the use of safer alternative methods, such as the use of biological plant and animal protection products.

In general, the use of colistin should be limited and controlled to prevent the development of resistance in bacteria and to maintain the effectiveness of antibiotics in treating infections in humans.
