Antibiotics in mussels, myth or reality?

Antibiotics in mussels, myth or reality?
Photo is illustrative in nature. From open sources.
Mussels are one of the most popular types of seafood in the world. They are rich in protein, vitamins and minerals such as iron and iodine. However, there is an opinion that mussels may containantibiotics . But is this true or is it just a myth?

First, let's understand what antibiotics are. Antibiotics are medicines that are used to fight infectious diseases. They kill bacteria or prevent their growth. Antibiotics can be used not only in medicine, but also in animal husbandry and agriculture.

Now back to the mussels. Mussels are marine animals that are grown in special farms. During rearing, mussels may receive feed that contains antibiotics. This is done in order to prevent the spread of infections among the mussels and keep them healthy . However, according to Russian law, farm-raised mussels cannot contain antibiotics above the prescribed level.

In addition, before the mussels hit the shelves, they are rigorously tested for the presence of antibiotics. If the level of antibiotics exceeds the set level, then the mussels do not pass the test and cannot be sold.

Thus, we can say that the myth that mussels contain antibiotics has no scientific basis. Of course, there is a possibility that mussels may contain antibiotics, but this is more the exception than the rule in itself.

In conclusion, we can say that antibiotics in mussels are more an exception to the rule than a rule in itself. However, we must be careful about what we eat and monitor the quality of the products in order to avoid possible negative consequences for our health. If you have doubts about the quality of mussels, it is better to contact the seller or manufacturer and ask all your questions.
